The zen of photography

If I'm struggling to figure something out -- maybe it's an idea for a scene or maybe it's something deeply personal -- I pick up my camera and make pictures.

Other times, I see a moment, and can't find the words to say what it makes me feel, so I make pictures instead.

And sometimes I make pictures for the sheer joy of seeing what takes shape inside my camera's frame.

These are for the joy.

These are great shots, Elizabeth. Muy bueno.

Considering how bad my Spanish is I've probably just asked for a frog in my bidet. Oh well, you get the point.

Whew! You had me worried there for a minute - glad these were for the joy. What a great place to be. Loved the rearview mirror shot. Very, very cool.

Wow, I reitterate angie, I loved the rearview mirror picture, I thought it was very beautiful but also tells a story. I really found it striking and emotional. Good job!

You really do have a talent with the camera, most of my shots either have too much flash so the subject's blinded or I'm moving while taking the picture so it's blurry.

Thanks for the pictures, I'm really enjoying them.

No frogs in Stephe's bidet, not today, anyway!

Beautiful shots, Elizabeth! That's very interesting how a camera helps you focus your thoughts. You are a really creative lady.

I LOVE the last one. The middle one is wonderful.

Thank you Bonnie for clearing up the Spanish, I was afraid a frog was about to ribbit from my bidet!

Glad you all like the rearview mirror shot. 'Cause that's about the only view any of us will have of the Teenager these days! That and his moppy head sleeping on his pillow.

And thanks Mai Wen for doing such a sweet thing on your blog! Check out her terrific blog at http://maiwen18.blogspot.com/. Besides being a sweetheart, Mai Wen is a great writer, too!

yes--i know this feeling well. often times i paint those stories that are hardest to tell before i ever write them. sometimes, if i'm lucky, the words will find their way to paper in the process of it all. and lately i find myself taking a lot of photos too.

maybe i'm just trying to capture as much of my life as possible before it slips away or is forgotten.

anyway, i love your photos AND your musings.

Dana, most of us here in the land of 105 degree days can only dream of water that cool. Maybe that's why I like this picture so much!

Anne, I'm so glad you stopped by! I've always loved the photos you post on your blog, it's an honor to hear that you like mine!

Erik and Amra, thanks for the visit! No contests for me, though. Something about writing for a contest makes my brain freeze.

Robert, you're a sweetheart, thank you!

Jessie, I'm curious, do you ever find yourself writing snapshots into your writing?

Mai Wen, I'm so glad we've become blog buddies! It's a joy to have you stop by!

In answer to your question, yeah, I think I do...but I try to give it motion at the same time. For example, today my husband and I were driving in a storm. I don't remember the last time I saw rain fall that hard. It was incredible! I asked V.: How could you WRITE that? Writing (at its best) is like a snapshot that is still living. I suppose the same is true for painting. Know what I mean? yeah, I have a feeling you do. ;)
